Scholarship Opportunities:

University Women's Commission Scholarship at UT 2004-2005

The Women’s Equity Action League (WEAL) of Ohio, in conjunction with UT’s Dept. of Women’s and Gender Studies and the BGSU Women’s Studies Program, are pleased to announce the second annual WEAL Writing Competition.  Prizes are $200, $100, and $50, recognition in WEAL and Women’s Studies publications, and a presentation at WEAL’s annual meeting.  Please note that this year the competition is limited to undergraduate students.

Wallenberg Scholar Award Available for 2004-2005 The Wallenberg  Award has been on the  UT campus since 1990. it is awarded to a fulltime student for "Exemplary and Meritorious Service to Those Unable to Help Themselves". It carries a $2500 grant-in-aid. It honors Raoul Wallenberg , one of the most renowned and esteemed individuals of the 20th century, a Swedish citizen, a non-Jew who accepted an assignment to go to Budapest in 1944 to save Jews. In 1981 he was conveyed honorary US citizenship.  The 10th and the current ,2003-04, recipient for the Award is Nancy Parker Seay. I attach an essay she wrote as a finalist.  If you or any of your colleagues know of worthy students, nominate them with a letter sent to the UT Scholarship Co-coordinator office in Rocket Hall. AAUW Educational Foundation Fellowships and Grants--Awards for doctoral candidates, women making career changes/advancement, and seed money for educational equity projects benefiting women and girls.

Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Awards
(Awards to assist women entering or re-entering the workforce in obtaining the education and skills training they need to improve their employment status. Applicants must be female heads of household who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program. Recipients may use their awards for any expenses related to their educational pursuits, such as tuition, books, housing, child care, and transportation.)

Lesbian Leadership Scholarship Program-- The deadline for scholarship applications is May 1st 2004.

Academic scholarships are a large component of Legacy’s program. Each year, after a competitive application process, Legacy awards Lesbian Leadership Scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate lesbian students at accredited colleges or universities in the United States. To qualify, all applicants must: Be planning to become a full-time student at an accredited college or university in the United States, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on their transcripts; demonstrate a commitment or contribution to the lesbian community; demonstrate financial need; and follow Legacy’s Lesbian Leadership Scholarship guidelines. Consideration will include: academic performance/honors, personal/financial hardship and, especially, service to the LGBT community. The scholarship funds are paid directly to the educational facility for tuition and not to the individual for other expenses.
