2005 Women college students interested in public policy are invited
to come for the fall semester to work side by side with
policymakers! PLEN's Women and Public Policy Internship Semester is
the only Washington, DC internship program devoted exclusively to
women and public policy and designed specifically for women students
who want to make a difference in the public policy arena.
Participants work as interns with women leaders in policy
organizations and agencies. Recent internship placements
include: ~ Center for Women Policy Studies ~ NOW Legal Defense and
Education Fund ~ Tahirih Justice Center ~ Ovarian Cancer National
Alliance ~ International Center for Research on Women ~ Girls
Incorporated EMILY's List~ Office on Women's Health,
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ~ National Coalition

As a national consortium of women's colleges working together to
prepare women for public leadership, PLEN has been placing women
students in challenging public policy internships since 1991,
helping them find the internship that best matches their interests
and skills. Students receive individualized attention in the
placement process and throughout the internship. The students also
participate in a weekly seminar on Women and Work in the Public
Policy Arena. As part of this seminar, students meet and learn about
a variety of issues and the policy process from women leaders in
advocacy and policy research organizations, Congress and government
agencies. The application deadline is July 11, 2005. PLEN may be
able to accept applications after the deadline. Interested students
should contact the PLEN office as soon as possible to discuss the
application and placement process. For more information about the
internship program, including an application form, visit our website
at www.plen.org. Please do not hesitate to contact the PLEN office
with questions or for additional information. Public Leadership

research, interviewing, and/or writing a Clemency Petition to
Governor Granholm on behalf of women prisoners.

First Meeting of Summer 2004 Campaign:
Wed. May 12, 7pm
Michigan Union, 2nd floor, Room 2105B
The Michigan Battered Women's Clemency Project is a grassroots
nonprofit group (3 attorneys, 1 artist/UofM professor, 1
activist/founder, plus volunteer attorneys, former prisoners,
domestic violence professionals, students, and citizens) seeking
freedom for women wrongly convicted of murder who killed their
abusers in self defense but never received fair trials or due
process based on the facts of their cases.
These are women who are serving life or long term sentences in
Michigan prisons.
This summer we are again preparing clemency petitions for a group
of these women to ask Governor Granholm to consider their cases,
writing letters of support for women to the parole board,
researching new cases, doing publicity, planning the fall rally, and
other advocacy and visibility efforts.
If you are willing to attend 6-8 meetings over the summer and do
research and/or advocacy on behalf of women prisoners, come to the
first meeting and/or please contact Carol Jacobsen, jacobsen@umich.edu
